I love working in monotone. It’s not just a great way to revisit that all-important principle I’m always banging on about—tonal values—it’s also seriously good fun!
Without the distraction of colour (as much as I adore it), we can zero in on the essentials: light, shadow, atmosphere, form, as well as how we use the brush—from bold washes to loose expressive marks.
There’s so much to explore and enjoy in this simple but powerful approach.
We’ll be doing two paintings—one in Sepia, one in Neutral Tint—but feel free to use whatever you like: Payne’s Grey, Van Dyke Brown, Burnt Umber, even just Ultramarine & Burnt Sienna.
A quick warning: painting in monotone is incredibly addictive!
