Painting Shadows in Watercolour

£18 for Watercolour School Members

For ages, I wrestled with painting shadows—despite the fact they’re one of the true joys of watercolour, as well as absolutely essential to creating a finished painting.

So instead of just banging on about how important they are, let’s dive into the what, where and how of painting shadows.

  • How do we see shadows?
  • When should we paint the shadows?
  • What colours should we use?
  • How dark should we paint them?
  • What paint consistency should we use?
  • Should we use transparent or opaque paint?
  • And how do we apply the paint to get that soft, luminous quality?

We'll be looking at all of these points and more...

...Because shadows are the glue that holds a painting together—they give it light, depth, and that magical sense of life (which is why painting them is so fun!)
