PAST MASTERS: Online Mini-Course

All painters throughout history have ridden on the backs of those who came before.

For centuries, we artists have created copies of classic paintings to gain insight into how the masters worked and to fold those lessons back into our own art.

It’s one of the oldest and most valuable practices in all of painting.

What we discover isn’t just technique. It’s a whole new way of seeing our subject!

Someone else has already made the big decisions for us the composition, the light, the colour harmony so we get to sit back, relax into the process, and simply enjoy painting while absorbing the lessons as we go.

On top of that, it is huge fun.

Truly. It can even make you fall in love with a painting or an artist in a much deeper way when you connect with them like this.

There’s a quote I loosely remember about originality being entirely dependent on the obscurity of its sources basically meaning none of us create in a vacuum.

So let’s totally own it. Let’s purposefully “copy” and learn from the best.

The twist here is that we’re taking three past masters known mainly for their oil paintings Sorolla, Monet, and Sargent (though all three were brilliant across multiple mediums, and if you’ve never seen Sargent’s watercolours, look them up… wow!) and we’re going to create master copies of their oil paintings… but in watercolour.

I cannot wait to do this. We’re going to dive deep into these paintings, feast on all the juicy morsels of their incredible work, and have an absolute blast translating their decisions, light, colour, and brushwork into our own watercolour language.

And this is genuinely useful for absolutely any experience level.

Beginners might feel overwhelmed at first, but the truth is the masters have already done the hard work. So let’s feast on the juicy morsels of technique, inspiration, and ideas, and gain a bit of guidance from the greats.

This is going to be a super fun exploration of painting and a total celebration of three of my all time favourite artists. We’ve got a colourist, a tonalist, and someone who beautifully combines both.

Let’s go for it!

CANCELLATION POLICY & EXTRA NOTES

Once payment is made I’m afraid all bookings are final. No refunds can be given for student cancellation. Bearing in mind you will have full lifetime access to stream or download the content.

By lifetime I simply mean that even if any of the third party hosting platforms disappear in the future there will always be an HD copy available somewhere for you to access.

I reserve the right to move dates and times, but only in genuinely unavoidable circumstances. This has happened on rare occasions but it is extremely uncommon.

In the event that I cannot run the course, it will be moved to a future time. Refunds will only be issued if the course never runs (and there's only a couple of extreme reasons it would never run!)

It is the student’s responsibility to learn how to use Zoom and Google Drive, and to check timings and time zones well in advance. I’ll always help where I can, but within a couple of hours of a live session starting I’m not available for troubleshooting.
