It might feel like these goals are out of reach or only for the
“advanced” painter, but I promise—they’re closer than you think, no matter where you’re starting from.
The key lies in striking the perfect balance between the logical, structured side of your brain (for technique and planning) and the intuitive, spontaneous side (for pure creative expression).
This workshop will give you the tools and confidence to embrace both, allowing you to loosen up, explore, and gain confidence with this wonderful, expressive medium.
We’ll focus on solid watercolour foundations with simple yet powerful techniques that you can apply right away.
Over five days, we’ll build progressively, each day adding to the last. You’ll gain the skills to create looser, bolder watercolours while being gently encouraged to explore your own ideas, push your boundaries, and take your painting in the direction you
desire.
The focus is on balancing the logical theory of the left brain with the creative flow of the right brain for maximum impact.
What makes this course truly exciting is that unleashing your creativity doesn’t need to be some mysterious, hard-to-understand process.
By combining a little pre-planning and thoughtful theory, we’ll create a springboard that allows you to paint more freely, letting the medium do what it does best.
This course is for anyone who loves watercolour and is looking to find their creative voice, loosen up, and explore new ways to work with the medium.
You’ll deepen your understanding of materials and techniques, all while developing your own unique style.
While the course is suitable for a range of experience levels, it's not designed for complete beginners.
I avoid labels like "beginner" or "intermediate" because they’re subjective, and often, we all struggle with self-doubt—no matter where we’re at!
If you're passionate about watercolour and have spent at least some time working with it, you’ll gain a lot from this course. It's equally great for more experienced painters who are looking to break through creative blocks or push their work in new directions.
Don’t worry—despite the focus on technique and creative exploration, the atmosphere will always be relaxed, informal, and super friendly.
Everyone in these courses is incredibly supportive of one another because we all know how tricky this journey can
be times—but we also share in the excitement and success as we go!
And if anything in the course feels intimidating or advanced, rest assured: it will be broken down in a simple, inspiring way.
It’s all about shifting how we think and encouraging a more playful approach to the medium—nothing is as complicated as it seems when you’re having fun with it!
Each day will be a mixture of theory and exercises, demos from Tom and plenty of painting time for attendees with one-on-one guidance from tom throughout.
Full details including a materials guide will be sent out plenty of time in advance.
In short your favourite materials will be fine, but we will need specific sizes and colours at times for certain, as well as definite sundries. I can happily guide for those wanting more direction.
We will cover a wide range of subjects through my demonstrations, but I will also be encouraging attendees to bring plenty of their own favourite subjects and reference too (all though everyone will be more than welcome to follow my lead)
Here's a revised version that's simpler and more concise:
If you haven't learned with me before, I recommend spending at least a month as a subscriber to my online watercolour school, attending a couple of online sessions, a one-day workshop, or watching one or two prerecorded tutorials. This is not required, but it helps provide a solid foundation for the in-person course.
